A girl's life changes totally with wedding...Now she has to take up a lot many things granted. They are not allowed to go out freely, always accompany a male to go out (embarrasing). They have to cook for sure, but the menu will be decided by the mother-in-law, moreover, the way you cook should be forgotten; because you need to cook according to their style (too spicy or oily).
Our Indian culture ranges of any other cultures...the daughter-in-law should not sit on the chair if any of the elders are there in the premises. You need to sit on the floor most of the day...you should not sleep late in the morning, Indian 'bahu'(daughter-in-law) should wake up early in the morning. She has to take head bath(if she sleeps with her husband) then come to kitchen for starting daily chores.
Kitchen is the drawing room, recreation room for a bahu. She has to prepare 'tea' a dozen times in a day, prepare according to their taste(hot or light) serve hot with a smile on face. She has to serve everyone and then she has to eat/drink the leftover in the dish.
Most of the middle-class families cannot afford a maid, bahu has to perform all duties - washing clothes, vessels, mopping floor, cleaning the floor, cooking etc.
Dressing - Indian Bahus has to wear saree in the home, nighties and chudidaars are also allowed these days but in few homes only. However, wearing jeans & tees are a dream...we are not allowed to wear sleevless blouses on sarees or other dresses. In front of the relatives and elders, Bahu has to cover her head with saree 'pallu' (a corner of the saree).
ornaments - bangles, Mangalsutra/black beads, toe rings are symbols of Indian Bahu. She should wear it at home for 24 hours...while going to a wedding, the Bahu has wear the things mentioned above along with all the jewelry given to her in the wedding. In a nutshell she looks like a mini gold shop. After all, it's a kind of showing off their bahu's jewelry to take proud in the community.
Socialization - Indian Bahu, should not step out without the permission of her husband and mother-in-law. The Bahu has no freedom to see her parents when she likes, she needs to seek permission from all the elders to see her parents (pathetic). She should not go out or peep through window when any procession going at the outdoors. She is not allowed for any fitness programs like yoga, gym or aerobics. Mother-in-law says, doing the chores itself keep us physically fit, so no need of any external fitness mantras.
Financial freedom - Most of the Indian Bahus are housewives, they're not allowed to work outside home though are talented than their spouse. She needs to beg her husband for each single penny.
Indian Bahus are made (maid) to do all the household chores to their husband's family for free of cost. They can't raise their voice against.
